NY STREET SCENE II is an original hand drawn lithograph by the NY figurative expressionist painter, Lester Johnson. Printed in black ink using hand lithography techniques on archival paper 100% acid free, full bleed image, no margins. NY Street Scene II portrays a black and white group portrait of walking women and men whose doll-like faces look upwards and sideways - not at each other, drawn in expressive watercolor-marker lines. Both male and female figures stand crowded together moving - one woman wearing slacks and high heels, man in a derby hat, bent arms, legs and man's arm on the composition's right edge holding a cigarette all add to the dynamic 1980's New York City scene. Print size - 29.75 x 22 inches, unframed, pencil signed and dated trial proof (Black and White approval sheet) by Lester Johnson Edition size - 175 Year published - 1979 As a figurative expressionist and member of the Second Generation of the New York School, painter Lester Johnson remained dedicated to the human figure as means of expression through the many stylistic changes of his oeuvre. Johnson exhibited his art at the Martha Jackson Gallery, Zabriskie Gallery, Gimpel & Weitzenhoffer, and James Goodman Gallery in New York as well as having been included in group shows at the Guggenheim, The Whitney, Museum of Modern Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was elected a member to both the American Academy of Arts & Letters and the National Academy of Design. Johnson lived and worked in New York City (on the Bowery), Springs, Milford (CT), Greenwich (CT), and Southampton, NY.

    This print depicts a baseball game mid-play. An umpire crouches with his hand up, and the batter stands poised. In the lower right, spectators peer onto the field. The awning of the stadium, silhouetted in black, cuts lines across the top of the composition, rising over a hillside crowded with homes. This finely-drawn lithograph features Zalopany's characteristic mastery of light and shadow, from the delicate texture of the field, to the spectators backlit in shadow. The composition of Baseball Game was taken from a page in an old picture book, depicting a downtown section of Caracas, Venezuela that is home to a number of Art Deco buildings, all built in the 1950's. Found images are a regular inspiration for Zalopany's large-scale realism. This print calls additionally on Zalopany's regular depiction of nature contrasted with the man-made: here, a behemoth stadium rises beside rolling hills, themselves punctuated with more buildings than trees. This contrast is enhanced by the use of textured, delicate handmade paper, which lends warmth to this dramatic black-and-white drawing. Image 37.5 x 28 in. / 95.25 x 71.2 cm.
